Fado and Keroncong

There was a beautiful aha-moment when I first realized some vague trace of my country in Lisbon, Portugal. Well, actually it’s the other way around. It’s how the Portuguese left their trace in my country hundreds of years ago.

It’s when I noticed some words similarity such us igreja (gereja in Indonesian), which means church. Also when I first heard its most famous music: Fado.

"Fado car" in the heart of Lisbon, playing Fado music all day long.

“Fado car” in the heart of Lisbon, playing Fado music all day long.

It was an instant “crush”. I’m loving its sound, its soul, and later I figured out that in fact, Fado influenced the original Indonesian music genre: Keroncong, especially in its melancholic spirit through traditional acoustic instruments. Keroncong itself began in Indonesia in 16th century when the Portuguese came in the country. It evolved to the modern Keroncong when ukulele (from Hawaii) was invented and became its main instrument.

What also excites me is knowing the most famous Fado singer Amália Rodrigues, who shares my first name :).

Krontjong Toegoe is the well-known keroncong community in Jakarta which lasts for generations. I found their practice session performing the classic keroncong song “Juwita Malam” on youtube. For your entertainment :).

Nude Girls Everywhere

Freedom to swing naked :)

Freedom to swing naked

Lately, naked women (or girls, whatever) become more easily accessed in the media. Be it on (paid) TV or the classic DVDs or the Internet. No more subscription, payment nor declaration that you’re above 18, people can just click and open.

I’m talking about Miley Cyrus’ latest music video “Wrecking Ball” and Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines”. It’s astonishing to see how this Miley’s nude video gets over 514 million views by now and become youtube’s record history*. While Robin’s the unrated version gets almost 30 million clicks. Statistics says a lot, doesn’t it? Sexy stuff is trendy.

People call it (modern) art, as these artists always stand behind the art-wall when it comes to nudity. Or else people call it liberalism, where exposing nakedness becomes the ultimate sign of freedom.

I feel sorry as it’s like the opposite of feminism where girls have to sell out their bodies to be recognized. Even more, behind this naked industry, they are men with infinite thirst and greed, using these girls as merely supernumeraries. What a lovely supernumerary.

It seems also that creativity (read: song writing, music creation) is more valuable than well-maintained body.

These are conservative thought and feeling, perhaps. But I find it just hard to comprehend how these lovely bodies being displayed so vulgarly. It’s like going back to the time where clothing was not a fashion, where primordial human beings did not see the urge of being covered. It’s like the opposite of civilisation, or… is it where civilisation will eventually lead human beings to?

I pondered of this and eventually I rather see it as a cluster than a level. Instead of thinking that the brave naked women are at the top of modernity aka civilisation (or the other way around: fully-covered women are), I think it’s a matter of clusters in society. Some women express themselves by being nude, some other celebrate their freedom by being covered. The statistics might change from time to time. And oh damn, the statistics perhaps now shows greater display of nudity.

To Whom It May Concern

RodriguezrealityBy: Rodriguez

Don’t sit and wait
Don’t sit and dream
Put on a smile
Go find a scene
I’m sure you’d meet
Someone who would really love you

Don’t sit and hope
Don’t sit and pine
If you’ve been hurt
Make up your mind
I’m sure you’d find
Someone who would really love you

I don’t know why you sit around
I only know if love is gone
Don’t sit alone with your pride

To whom this may concern to say
Don’t wait for love to come your way
Don’t waste your time
Make up your mind
And make it happen

I don’t know why you sit around
I only know if love is gone
Don’t sit alone with your pride
Listen to me and you would see
Just how fine your romance could be

I don’t know why you sit around
I only know if love is gone
Don’t sit alone with your pride
Listen to me and you would see
Just how fine your romance could be

Today and several or many days later, I will post many poems by Rodriguez. I’m simply blown away by his words. How he used simple diction, yet he was able to compose it into a beautiful poetry.

Help!

A song is always someone’s soundtrack of life. I have plenty on my own. But, this song is extraordinary as every single word of the lyrics is so applicable for me — at the very moment. And… have I told you that I really like the Beatles? HELP! is one of my favorites. Enjoy!

(seriously, I hope you enjoy it! I also like the video. It’s creatively simple. It’s simply creative)

Help!

Help, I need somebody,
Help, not just anybody,
Help, you know I need someone,
Help!

When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody’s help in anyway.
But now these days are gone, I’m not so self assured,
Now I find I’ve changed my mind, I’ve opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I’m feeling down
And I do appreciate you being ’round.
Help me get my feet back on the ground,
Won’t you please, please help me?

And now my life has changed in oh so many ways,
My independence seems to vanish in the haze.
But every now and then I feel so insecure,
I know that I just need you like, I’ve never done before.

Help me if you can, I’m feeling down
And I do appreciate you being ’round.
Help me get my feet back on the ground,
Won’t you please, please help me?

Triggers of Wars

Following the news about crisis in Egypt, about Ahmadiyah and all, then of course some observers prattling on TV… really gets me some heartburn. Funny, just because of different opinions, they fight on TV. Maybe it’s just me. Beinf too sensitive and naive. But, I’ve never stopped agreeing on John Lennon’s words in his song: Imagine. If there is no country, no religion, no heaven and hell, nothing to kill and die for, maybe this world will be more beautiful. People will live peacefully side by side. Maybe, yes maybe. Maybe as a consequence of human nature that is egotistical and insatiable, the jungle law would still apply. And if this law prevails, things would just be the same… another war, another riot, another hostility…

War is a behavior pattern of organized violent conflict typified by extreme aggression, societal disruption, and high mortality. It involves two or more organized groups. In all cases, at least one participant/group in the conflict perceives the need to either psychologically or materially dominate the other participant. In all wars, the group(s) experiencing the need to dominate other group(s) are unable and unwilling to accept or permit the possibility of a relationship of fundamental equality to exist between the groups who have opted for group violence/war (Wikipedia)

I am thinking that war is the most ridiculous thing on earth. It results in nothing but pain, loss, sadness, chaos, hatred, trauma, sorrow, misery, and all negative things can be. It is caused by the one and only: difference. People worship uniformity. People allied. People endowed with desire (baca: nafsu) which if it is not wisely controlled it will lead to some destructive acts i.e. war.

I have listed several triggers of wars as follow. You might think of something else too.

1. Ideology
2. Autocracy
3. Religion
4. Race/racialism
5. Natural resourse
6. Money, property, or wealth
7. Tribe or ethnic group
8. Romance, love, or lust

People don’t learn, do they? Human history has been stained by wars all over the world. But still… we practice it up till now, even though we claim ourselves as civilized. What’s civilized about killing and destroying one’s life? Ooh, I am so sick of it. Life is so short. Can we just live it peacefully?

Imagine on Youtube

Imagine there’s no Heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky

Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too

Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

My friends, it is so okay to be different, don’t you think?

I’ll Remember You

I love this song. It sounds like a lullaby. Elvis Presley sings so beautifully with his soothing voice. This song has special history for me. I like listening to it, but at the same time it always breaks my heart.

I posted this song here and today because last night I dreamt about it. Everything was so lucid. I remember the hands holding around my waist and this song was continually played throughout the dream.

I miss someone attached to this song, so badly. It makes me feel smothered, but I am also “enjoying” the pain. I am addicted the emotions come along this song.

I’ll Remember You by Elvis Presley

I’ll remember you
Long after this endless summer is gone
I’ll be lonely oh so lonely
Leaving only me to remember you

I’ll remember you
Your voice as soft as the warm summer breeze
Your sweet laughter, mornings after
Ever after, Ooooh, I’ll remember you

To your arms someday I’ll return to stay
Till then…

I will remember too
Every bright star we made wishes upon
Love me always, promise always
Ooooh, you’ll remember too
