Being alone sucks in many ways and occasions, namely: the happy times when you want to share it with a human being and not a silly diary (or blog, ha!), the sad times when you need to be cheered up (and not laughed at), the sick times when you dream of warm soup delivered to your room, the healthy times when you have all the energy to do some crazy fun stuff with someone, anyone…

However, there are also plenty of times when you prefer to be alone, really! That is when:

- your skin exfoliating
- you desperately need to fart, especially you know very well it will be loud and stinky
- you need to scratch your butt
- you need to pick something from your nose
- you cry over something ridiculous

Okay, okay, that was not a good attempt to be funny or helpful. But honestly, you sometimes feel that being alone is good, don’t you? To put it more seriously, you do need your “alone time”. That’s the time where there is just you… well, and yourself.

There are too many things to mention on what you can do when you’re alone. To give you some idea:

It can be a time to think. Think about you, about what you want to be when you are forty. Will you have that small family with two kids or three and gorgeous husband (or wife)? Or will you end up very rich and successful and has lots of men (or women) craving to be with you? You may not have those thoughts when someone is around – distracting you with their stories, bombarding you with questions and asking for opinion they don’t actually want to hear. Yes, in your solitude, you may have the chance to listen more to yourself, understand yourself, and figure out what you really want.

On the other hand, it can also be a time not to think aka think of nothing! Admit it: for whole life you are pushed to think about everything. Think about work, about money, about what you will eat for lunch or what you will wear for a first date, about time to wake up, about whether it will rain or not, about the traffic, about pollution, about being told that your soap is damaging the environment, about why that stupid guy doesn’t chase after you anymore, yes, about every single damn thing! Don’t you feel tired? Aren’t you tempted to have your alone time and think of nothing? (Funnily, when you actually spend some time of solitude, the first thing comes in your mind will be: why do I do this?)

Anyways, the bottom-line line is: it’s okay to be alone. Don’t feel bad about it. On the contrary, be grateful! It is a luxury many people yearn for. Being with yourself who is the most reliable and believable and won’t do any harm to you. That would be fun!

Sudah bukan rahasia lagi kalau pegawai negeri sipil (PNS) adalah salah satu profesi yang paling dicari di Indonesia Raya. Tiap tahun, rIbuan orang berduyung-duyung mengikuti seleksinya (kecuali tentu saja tahun-tahun di mana penambahan PNS sedang dihentikan). Kenapa demikian? Setelah melakukan observasi dan riset sederhana, ternyata yang paling dicari orang dari profesi ini adalah:
- security (long lasting employment with almost zero possibility to be laid off)
- dana pensiun (yang meskipun nggak seberapa tetap menjadi bentuk jaminan masa tua yang menenangkan)
- peluang untuk menyambi menjadi pengusaha
- power atau authority (kekuasaan atau kewenangan)

Ketika dulu saya menjadi PNS dan diberi orientasi mengenai kehidupan per-PNS-an, saya ingat ada satu materi yang membuat saya begitu eneg (alias ingin muntah) yaitu: Citra PNS. Masyarakat punya pendapat mengenai PNS. Kebanyakan bukan pendapat yang bagus, sebab peribahasa “nila setitik rusak susu sebelanga” berlaku di dunia PNS. Karena itulah Citra PNS dianggap sebagai materi yang penting dalam kurikulum orientasi.

Kali ini saya sedang ingin membahas menyanggah beberapa pendapat, atau sebut saja mitos, yang menurut saya tidak benar atau tidak sepenuhnya benar. Mitos-mitos itu adalah……… eng ing eng……….

1. Masuk PNS itu harus nyogok

Tidak benar! Mungkin ada masanya ketika PNS dapat diperjualbelikan dengan 20, 30 atau 70 juta. Yang jelas saya tahu pasti kalau saya dulu masuk lewat tes berlapis, saya tidak kenal siapapun di sana, tidak dipungut biaya apapun dalam tes, dan tidak membayar siapapun. Saya cukup yakin semua teman seangkatan saya, dan beberapa angkatan di atas dan di bawah saya juga menjalani proses yang sama. Demikian juga dengan saudara dan teman-teman saya di daerah. Kenyataan ini cukup membuat mitos pertama terbantahkan. Masuk PNS itu tidak harus nyogok .

2. PNS itu orangnya bodoh-bodoh

Ini juga salah. Setidaknya di Departemen tempat saya dulu melamar menjadi PNS, IPK minimal untuk lulusan S1 adalah 2.75 (sekarang mungkin sudah naik lagi standarnya). Lulusannya pun harus berasal dari universitas dan jurusan yang terakreditasi A. Saya sendiri lulusan ITS Surabaya. Teman-teman saya dulu lulusan UI, ITB, UGM, Unpad, Trisakti, Undip, dan universitas berkualitas lainnya. Jurusannya pun nggak main-main: Teknik Kimia, Teknik Perminyakan, Ekonomi Pembangunan, termasuk… ehem… Statistika . Jadi, kalau dilihat dari asal universitasnya, jurusannya, IPK-nya kita bisa sanggah pernyataan di atas.

3. PNS itu korup

Gayus memang korup. Negara banyak dirugikan karena ulahnya. Pejabat banyak yang korup dan berkolusi juga dalam sistem lelang (mengadakan lelang tapi pemenangnya sudah ditetapkan sejak awal, lalu akan ada bagi hasil di akhir proyek). Saya dulu juga pernah korup atau membantu kegiatan korupsi: menerima uang rapat (ceperan 100 sampai 500 ribu karena duduk manis dalam rapat), atau dinas ke daerah sendirian tapi membawa lima SPPD lalu ngasih amplop ke orang yang men-stempel SPPD (dengan demikian, orang-orang yang nggak dinas akan mendapat uang dinas dan saya mendapat sedikit lebih sebagai upah jalan). Tapi tidak semuanya seperti itu. Saya tahu beberapa PNS yang tidak korup. Dan saya juga tahu yang bukan PNS korup . Tidak semua PNS korup.

4. Jadi PNS tidak bisa kaya

Salah besar! Banyak sekali PNS yang lebih kaya dari yang bukan PNS, hehe. Kita memang tahu gaji PNS nggak seberapa. Tapi tunjangan (terutama PNS pusat dan terutama lagi Departemen strategis) tergolong tinggi dibanding yang bekerja di swasta. Depkeu tentu menjadi contoh favorit karena mereka bisa mendapat 7 juta untuk golongan IIIA, sementara yang bekerja sebagai bank officer dengan latar belakang pendidikan yang sama harus bersabar dengan gaji di bawah 7 juta. Banyak PNS yang mengoleksi properti mahal, mobil mewah, atau simpanan emas. Biasanya sih mereka punya usaha sampingan. Tapi ada beberapa juga yang usaha sampingannya adalah mengurusi proyek di kantor . Kita nggak usah membahas Gayus ya, nanti malah sakit hati karena iri, hehehe.

5. Kalau sudah masuk PNS susah keluar

Kenyataannya, nggak susah kok. Ada banyak contoh PNS yang keluar setelah beberapa saat mengenyam hidup sebagai abdi negara. Ada yang baru setahun, tiga tahun, ada juga yang sudah lebih dari sepuluh tahun dan sempat mencicipi posisi hingga eselon 3 memutuskan melepas jabatannya. Normalnya memang profesi PNS adalah pelabuhan terakhir bagi kebanyakan orang. Setelah lelah melanglang buana di dunia swasta atau dunia serabutan, banyak yang jungkir balik berusaha menjadi PNS dan menjadi abadi di sana hingga pensiun. Tapi, kalau seseorang memang nggak kerasan dan punya alasan kuat untuk resign, tidak mustahil untuk berhenti menjadi PNS. Kalau berhentinya baik-baik, nanti akan diberi SK yang menyebutkan kalau yang bersangkutan “diberhentikan dengan hormat atas permintaan sendiri.”

Sekian dulu rasan-rasan PNS-nya. Mungkin ada mitos yang lain, tapi capek ah nulisnya!

Well, normalnya, orang tidak akan bepergian dengan taksi sesering itu. Tapi kenyataannya, Jakarta semakin sesak dengan mobil. Fenomena yang sering saya amati ketika saya naik mikrolet dan terjebak macet adalah: mobil-mobil di seputaran saya dinaiki hanya oleh satu orang. Ya! Pemandangan semacam itu hampir selalu saya jumpai. Mikrolet saya masih mending. Karena kalaupun saya adalah satu-satunya penumpang, setidaknya saya berdua dengan si sopir, hehehe.

Jadi ceritanya… hari ini saya iseng lihat-lihat harga mobil di intenet. Dan saya kaget karena ternyata harga mobil itu tidak mahal. Banyak banget mobil yang dijual di harga seratus jutaan. Bahkan untuk mobil second, harganya lebih banyak lagi yang miring. Duh! Pantas saja orang pada beli mobil! Apalagi orang Jakarta yang pendapatannya lumayan tinggi. Apalagi semuanya bisa dicicil. Apalagi bensin disubsidi. Apalagi bawa mobil itu bisa meningkatkan gengsi!

Banyak orang berpendapat bahwa dengan bermobil mobilitas akan semakin semakin mudah, bebas menentukan mau pergi ke mana. Pendapat itu ada benarnya. Tapi apa benar fleksibilitas itu setara (paid-off) dengan tingkat stres karena macetnya jalanan?

Jangan dikira saya nggak stres ketika menggunakan angkutan umum (baik itu busway, KRL, mikrolet, kopaja, dan taksi). Terjebak macet atau menunggu antrean atau berdesakan dengan penumpang lain juga ada level stresnya tersendiri. Bagi pengendara mobil, jelas kenyamanan menjadi prioritas karena tentu lebih enak terjebak macet dalam ruangan ber-AC diiringi musik dari sound-system yang yahud. Sementara pengguna angkutan umum harus bersentuhan dengan banyak orang dengan aroma yang kebanyakan nggak sedap .

Karena itulah saya nggak mau menyalahkan para pemilik mobil itu. Mereka punya uang buat beli (atau buat nyicil), punya uang buat bayar bensin (yang disubsidi!), punya uang buat bayar parkir, buat servis rutin, buat nyuci, buat bayar pajak, dan lain sebagainya. Saya juga nggak mau menyalahkan Pemerintah yang seolah-olah nggak kerja soalnya jalanan tambah macet (Pemerintah berulang kali disalahkan juga cuek aja, hehehe). Saya memang menulis ini bukan untuk mengkritik siapa-siapa, melainkan untuk menyampaikan rasa maklum menghadapi mobil di jalanan semakin hari semakin menyemut.

Saya sesungguhnya juga merasakan hal yang sama. Saya selalu ingin tahu berapa berapa pendapatan orang-orang sehingga jalanan Jakarta semakin hari semakin dipenuhi mobil-mobil pribadi. Saya tentu saja juga ingin tahu apakah yang saya terima sudah masuk akal dan layak. Karena itu saya bikin riset kecil-kecilan untuk mengumpulkan informasi mengenai rentang gaji berbagai profesi di Indonesia.

Metode:
- Bertanya secara kasual pada kenalan, teman, dan kerabat
- Info lowongan pekerjaan yang mencantumkan penawaran gaji
- Menjelajahi internet, termasuk milis-milis
- Semua bersifat random, artinya tidak ada kerangka tertentu dalam pengambilan sampel
- Angka disajikan dalam Rupiah/bulan

Disclaimer:
- Kadang tidak akurat: ada yang membesar-besarkan, ada yang mengecil-kecilkan

PNS menerima gaji pokok yang bersifat seragam menurut golongan dan pangkat, ditambah tunjangan yang bervariasi menurut institusi dan status keluarga. Saya terakhir bekerja di Dep. ESDM tahun 2009 dengan gaji kira-kira 1,8 dan tunjangan 1,6 juta. Masih ditambah penghasilan lain dari honor-honor tim dan sisa biaya perjalanan dinas (waktu itu belum at cost).

Since I am not (yet) a mother, I will not babble nor being romantic about the amazement and amusement of being a mother. Instead, I will see it in the perspective of a woman – not merely a mother.

The commemoration date itself derived from one historical event on 22 December 1928 when Kowani was established. Kowani is the abbreviation for Kongres Wanita Indonesia or National Council of Indonesian Women’s Organizations. Now, there are 82 women’s organizations join Kowani which purpose is to strive for the equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities for women and men. The date is then well-known as “Hari Ibu” which actually is translated into Indonesian Women’s Day (and NOT Indonesian Mothers’ Day).

Okay, enough for the history. Now let’s move to the main course: some babbles on how great it is to be a woman, or yeah… my title says: a lady (so that it rhymes with the word “happy”, hehe)

When I was young(er), I once wrote an article about how much easier to be a man than a woman. The social pressure is harder for women, if I may recall what I wrote. Women should wear more clothes than men, old virgin women are shame in society, women are blamed when “married by accident” happens, women are this and that, women are not allowed for this and that. Oh, I was so young .

Years afterwards, my opinion have shifted and now I really think that actually being a woman is not that difficult compared to being a man. In fact, women are given so much privilige (and lenience) which of course sometimes seems unfair.

Women get the seat on public transportation. There is a moral obbligation that a man should offer his seat if a woman (especially the pregnant and old one) miss a seat.

Women first, yeah you know that famous saying: ladies first.

Women “only” need to be pretty to get attention. But men need to be smart and powerful and rich for that.

Feminism makes women not only equal – but higher than men.

Women have more opportunities to get scholarships.

Women get allotment in legislation – not based on capacity nor capability but merely gender.

Women have way more options for clothing.

Women are forgiven for their silliness, stupidity, whine, nag, and ehem… irrational use of credit card.

If a woman do not get married until her thirties, she can always say she has not found the one. For a man, the pressure to decide is bigger (if you can’t decide, you’re not a man). Especially in a society where marital status takes an important part in labeling people (ladies, you are very welcome to argue on this, hehehe).

If a woman do not achieve well in her career, she can easily justify it with many excuses: she focuses on family, or she waits for a prince on the white horse to rescue her (again ladies, you may argue on this).

Women will be mothers. Heaven is on mother’s feet. What can beat that?

Who doesn’t like shopping? Nobody. If given all resources needed to shop, then I am pretty sure that everybody love shopping. Fulfilling needs is everybody’s need. But do you realize that we now live in the world where piles and piles of products “attack” you uncontrollably? Producers keep feeding you with all kind variants you don’t even need.

I strongly recommend a video prepared by “The Story of Stuff Project” founded by Annie Leonard. I knew this video the first time about a couple of years ago and I loved it instantly.
